The "Window of Opportunity" of Young Adulthood

Writer: Wendy SummerWendy Summer
In young adulthood, growth has a natural momentum.
In young adulthood, growth has a natural momentum.

If you are a young adult reading this, your brain is in a state of “heightened neuroplasticity,” meaning it, and you, are primed and ready to grow. After years of massive learning, you are completing late-stage frontal cortex development and creating a host of “adult” neural pathways.

What does this mean exactly? It means that there is an organic readiness in you to learn how to “adult.”

Despite fears and anxieties, you want to learn how to live independently. You want to learn how to work, pay bills, make friends, and manage your emotional life, even if you don't necessarily know how to do all these things. In fact, I'm guessing that the desire to figure out how to "adult" is one of the reasons you are reading this.

The exciting news is that what you learn now can impact the rest of your life. Again, what you learn now can change the trajectory of your life. It’s not that we can’t change our neural pathways as we get older, it’s that right now (through your twenties), you have biology on your side. This neurological “window of opportunity” makes growth easier, helping you to establish emotional management patterns that can positively impact the rest of your life.

It works like this: As you learn to manage your inner life, your ability to experience satisfaction in your life is exponentially increased. You move from emotional overwhelm or shut down to emotional agility. In doing so, you have more access to the full you, so that your interests and abilities can be more fully expressed in the world. In short, you are happier and more confident.

“Adulting with Wendy” is about teaching you how to do these things. My goal is to help you harness your developmental readiness to successfully learn emotional management. I offer practical, bite-size guidance specifically designed for you (though this guidance applies to adults of any age). If you like how this sounds, subscribe to my newsletter and follow me on socials for weekly content. I’m so excited to work together!
